DESCRIPTION

The Community Development Intern (CDI) will support the Dja Biophere Reserve Team and particularly the Community Development Officer in ensuring successful implementing of activities of Community Development projects in the Dja Landscape, in Cameroon. The CDI will assist for differents AWF projects in the planification, execution and monitoring of activities related to income generation, community engagement in conservation and environmental education/sensitization. Income generating activities include the valorization of Non-Timber Forest Products (organization of trainings, awareness-raising, market research and regular monitoring of activities), being keeping, agroforestry and sustainable small-scale agriculture.

Location: Dja Biosphere Reserve (with option to be transferred to Faro National Park or Campo-Ma’an National Park)

Duration: One (01) Year

Responsibilities

  • Support with the planification, realization and reporting of community’s development activities (awareness raising, trainings, group structuration, etc.).
  • Support with nurseries development, management and monitoring.
  • Support with agroforests plantations development, management and monitoring.
  • Assist in the development of training modules and capacity building facilitation sessions.
  • Provide support for the structuration of producer groups (NTFP collectors and owners of agroforestry plantations) and income-generating activities development
  • Provide support in the logistical preparation and organization of workshops, trainings and sensitization sessions, exchange visits, etc.
  • Participate in site coordination meetings and the capitalisation of experience;
  • Assist in the production and dissemination of communications material to partners;

Context

The African Wildlife Foundation, Cameroon Office has initiated a Young Graduate Professional Internship Programme to offer an opportunity to young graduates to gain experience in conservation and to familiarize with the non-governmental organization environment.

Position Summary

The Biomonitoring Intern will support the Dja Biosphere Reserve team in general coordination in-field of ongoing ecological monitoring and patrol activities. He or She will work closely with rangers/community members or guides to ensure ecological data is collected, compiled and achieved following AWF procedures. He/she will also give a support to Technical Advisor by inputting camera trap data into require database for identification and reporting.


Location: Dja Biosphere Reserve (with option to be transferred to Campo-Ma’an National Park or Faro National Park)


Duration: One (01) Year


Responsibilities:

  • Support implementation of ongoing ecological monitoring activities in Dja Biosphere Reserve and its peripheries, with data collection and management following relevant established Monitoring protocols;
  • Assist in planning, conducting and reporting patrol missions;
  • Support the Management of Camera Traps, Deployment and ensure the Camera trap database is up to date;
  • Ensure communication between Rangers in the field and base is effective through the InReach System in the operational Control Room.
  • Work closely with Rangers and coordinate field deployment and pickup for Camera traps in the field;
  • Assist Rangers staff with data management and analysis and train/strengthen the capacity of appointed park rangers for these tasks;
  • Assist in raising local community awareness and participation in conservation issues and project related activities;
  • Under supervision of the Protected Area Technical Advisor, produce concise and well written field reports on a regular basis to ensure TA and other AWF staff are well briefed on program activities;

Logistics Assistant-Faro (Open to Cameroon Nationals Only)

DESCRIPTION

The Logistics Assistant (LA) provides practical, logistical and planning support to the Faro Landscape operations. This position is responsible for site development and equipment maintenance, logistics and planning. The position reports to Landscape Manager/Technical Advisor (LMTA) and is based at Faro National Park.

Responsibilities

Site Development and Equipment Maintenance

  • Support the function and maintenance of infrastructure and equipment at Park Headquarters in Voko and the Faro Base Camp in the park, and those that support project activities in the landscape;
  • Provide training and instructions to staff for the above and other project-related activities;
  • Manage repairs, maintenance, and readiness of project motorcycles, all-terrain vehicles including trucks, quads, and generators;
  • Create a maintenance schedule for motorcycles, automobiles and other equipment;
  • Prepare a monthly report on maintenance and repair of vehicles and other equipment;
  • Monitor contracts for infrastructure and improvement in progress, including road building and maintenance and clearly raise any issues/challenges to the FAA;
  • Monitor and maintain solar energy production, use and storage and immediately advise LMTA if irregularities arise;
  • Assure daily functioning of all office equipment with particular emphasis in satellite and internet communications;

Logistics

  • Act as the primary support person to the missions and needs of the SdC;
  • Develop and maintain a complete and detailed list of equipment and consumables necessary for operations, with particular emphasis on support to the MINFOF, Conservation Service (SdC), Conservation Support Personnel (PACs), Tangos, and others conducting missions in the park and Faro Landscape;
  • Create procurement, stocking, monitoring and evaluation tools for equipment and consumables;
  • Be responsible for procurement of all consumables, including food rations and fuel, necessary to conduct park operations;
  • Responsible for the arrangement of travel and accommodations of AWF personnel in the landscape;
  • Provide the required components of the annual report to the Faro Landscape Director (FLD) for compilation, verification, and transmission to AWF and donors;
  • Support teams working on park roads and other infrastructure;

Planning

  • Conduct work planning and organizing of day workers including their work hours, transport, safety, confirmed presence and payment;
  • Identify potential providers for equipment and various services who are based in northern Cameroon;
  • Work with the FLD and LMTA to anticipate and plan future construction and equipment needs;
  • Be proactive to anticipate equipment and supply needs to procure them in a timely fashion;
  • Communicate with the Project Finance and Administration Officer on budget aspects of equipment and consumables purchases;
  • Identify needs and planning details to establish a mechanical/repair/construction workshops at project sites;
  • Review health, safety, emergency, hygiene protocols in place and identify future training needs for personnel under the supervision of AWF;
  • Include in the annual report evaluation data and follow-up for site development, maintenance and equipment procurement, and ;
  • Other reasonable duties as requested by supervisors.

REQUIREMENTS

  • At least a High National Diploma (BTS: Brevet des Techniciens Superieurs in French) Logistics or related’
  • Minimum 2 years of relevant work experience preferably in an International NGO or enterprise;
  • Clean driving license with a minimum of 5 years of driving;
  • Strong ability in planning, organizing and coordinating activities;
  • Inventory and Stores Management, Procurement and Logistics Principles;
  • Internet/email communication skills ;
  • Ability to communicate effectively in French with English and Fulfulde as additional skills;
  • Ability to pay attention to detail and meet strict deadlines;
  • Ability to work as part of a team in a multicultural environment living under difficult conditions in a remote location;
  • Quick learner/fast adapter with high level of flexibility;
  • Familiarization in dealing with government departments, revenue authorities and immigration departments; and,
  • A clear commitment to AWF and our mission.
