Terms of Reference for hiring the services of a
Consultant/specialist of Banana-plantain Proliferation in fragments, to deliver a theoretical and practical training to
smallholder female farmers growing Banana-plantain in Bane Centre A, Ngoulemakong (Mvila Division, South Region).

As a result, we take a crucial step todevelop economic resilience and food security for rural people by providing training and support to farmers. We also place an emphasis on supporting small-scale farmers to adopt sustainable and efficient farming methods which will strengthen their capacity to withstand climate change and various socio-economic shocks.
General context of the project:
The ‘’Akoeman CDP improvement of agricultural income through increased productivity of banana plantain by female farmers’’ is a micro-project designed by Good Neighbors within the framework of improving the income generating activities of rural women in order to strengthen their economic resilience. The main objective of this project is to improve incomes in rural areas through training and monitoring of a cooperative group of female farmers who are involved in the small scale production of banana/plantain and banana/plantain suckers and who wish to improve their performance as well as learn better techniques to multiply plantlets both for the aim of increasing their crop population and for sales.
Responsibilities of the trainer:
- Design a training curriculum on MS word or PowerPoint format.
- Prepare user-friendly presentations for illiterate and semi-illiterate rural dwellers
- Design and prepare training manuals and handouts for the training
- Prepare technical materials for the training
- Introduce different facilitation/learning techniques such as group discussions, illustrations, role play and any other relevant exercise. Demonstrate quality facilitation skills with adults during the training sessions.
- Lead and conduct the training session from the beginning to the end
- Encourage participants to share case stories and practical experience
- Conduct practical demonstrations
- Formally evaluate the technical knowledge of trainees through a pre-test and a post-test.
- Ensure that the training covers the risks relatedto the use of organic and non-organic substances by farmers in the production process and in preparing fragments.
- The training will lay emphasis on the business and marketing techniques to be used in order to turn the fragments’ production into a good profit-making business, with a focus on collective marketing and sales. It ought to build trainees’ capacity for business planning and record keeping, using an instructive but simplified example of cost– benefit calculation. The training course should be lengthy and detailed, using andragogy methods of teaching.
- The training should cover the steps that need to be taken to care for and to grow in an optimal way the common banana-plantain suckers, plants proliferated in fragments as well as the easiest and cheapest applicable technology for optimal production of plantlets in rural areas. Important aspects such as water management and natural soil fertilization practices and integrated pest management should be covered.
- The trainer ought to provide advice on the ingredients and recipes for organic or semi-organic fertilizers, as well as pesticides and pest repellents that could be produced easily and those that could be easily purchased to disinfect the nurseries as well as the fragments/sprouts or suckers.
- He/she ought to promote sustainable and environment-friendly farming practices.
Objectives of the training:
- Build farmers’ capacity for improved efficient and more productive techniques for Banana-plantain proliferation in fragments as well as for managing common banana-plantain sprouts/suckers.
- Equip beneficiaries with good techniques for building multiplication layers/hotbeds and sprouted using local (easy to find and cheap) materials.
- Educate farmers on ways to detect the common pest and diseases in a multiplication layer or hotbed /sprouted early, as well as methods to handle the latter.
- Enhance farmers’ knowledge about the differences between fragments of crop cultivars or varieties as far as banana/plantain is concerned and the treatment convenient to each cultivar or variety during proliferation in fragment.
- Empower beneficiaries with skills and recipes for producing and using organic fertilizers needed for proliferation in fragments as well as for the successful growth of the young plantlets on farm.
Duration of the Activity:
The training will be completed within 4days, from 18th to 21st August 2020.
Initially planned for 2 days, it is now scheduled to last 4 days due to the COVID 19 crisis that compels us to split the group of participants in two in order to prevent the spread of the disease. We shall therefore have a group of 40 participants on the first two days and a different group of 40 participants on the last two days.
Venue:
The training will be held in a hall in Ngoulemakong which is supplied with electricity to power a projector and Microphone. Practicals will be made on a small farm prepared for the activity.
Target/Audience /Participants:
80 female participants will attend the training: (70 direct and 10 indirect project beneficiaries). 40 participants will be trained on the first two days and another 40 participants on the last two days.
Language:
The whole training session will be made using French as most beneficiaries understand basic French.
Expected outputs:
Farmers are well equipped with knowledge and skills to practice proliferation in fragments. They can identify plantlets for different crop varieties, create, maintain, take care of plantain fragments’ hotbeds and carry-out transfer of plants from hotbed to the main farm.
Farmers’ capacity to develop a business through the production of banana/plantain suckers and plantlets is improved.
A Written report of the training session (in English) shall be submitted by the trainer to Good Neighbors Cameroon office within one month after completing the training.
Professional and Personal attributes:
- Have at least 3 years’ experience in conducting similar training sessions with smallholder farmers.
- Be an Engineer in Agronomy or an Agricultural research specialist having been trained with specialized practical skills in banana/plantain multiplication. through proliferation in fragments.
- Have skills in communicating, conducting meetings and leading workshops and training seminars.
- Have a perfect knowledge of French (oral and written), and the ability to work in English for the production of reports.

Payments
Payments are made in local currency (XAF).
Payment will be made in two installments:
A start-up advance of 40%.
The second after receipt and approval of outputs (60%)
In order to receive payment, the Consultant shall submit an invoice indicating the portion for which it has been issued and, in the case of reimbursable expenses, supporting documents.

You are invited to submit a detailed proposal reflecting training contents and methodologies for the activity, the detailed budget solicited for the package of services expected, a copy of your CV or resume (English or French),the administrative identification file of your organization(Taxpayer card & Attestation of bank account ownership) and copies of documents that will attest to your professional abilities to deliver the service expected to cmr.ad.gni@goodneighbors.org . Applications will be accepted until the 11th August 2020 at 23h59.
NB: No means of transportation will be made available by Good Neighbors for the trainer/training team to travel to the training site. There are moderate lodging facilities in Mbalmayo, a town situated 1-hour drive from Ngoulemakong (moving towards Yaoundé). However, the trainer/training team is free to lodge wherever convenient to him/them.
