Organizational Setting

Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is implementing the TCP/INT/3705 (D) project entitled “Support to enhance preparedness for Fall Armyworm invasion among countries” in collaboration with the Government of Cameroon (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MINADER), through its central and decentralised offices (phytosanitary base and brigades). The project’s main objective is to enhance the Global food security.

This objective will be achieved through i) Global Fall Armyworm Technical Working Groups (TWG) to incorporate colleagues from NENA and Asia strengthened and priority areas of work endorsed.; ii) A pool of Farmer Field School Trainers in place and awareness among all stakeholders (farmers/extensionists/plant protection officers) on sustainable FAW management, including local production of biocontrol agents enhanced; iii) Monitoring, early warning and advice to farmers on FAW through further development and implementation of the Fall Armyworm Monitoring and Early Warning system (FAMEWS) and the FAO-PlantVillage Digital Assistant enhanced; iv) Advocacy material produced and project proposals and/or concept notes developed…

Reporting Lines

The Specialist in Integrated Pest Management (IPM) will be under the direct supervision of the FAO Representative in Cameroon and the technical guidance of the FAO Lead Technical Officer (LTO) of the project.

Technical Focus

Elaboration of a regional IPM strategy with a special focus on the demonstration country of Cameroon, including the planning for the organization of IPM field demonstration sites.

Tasks and responsibilities

•    Develop a regional IPM strategy for FAW-Control, aligned with the implementation of the two-year work plan (2021–2022) in close collaboration with National Task Force for Fall Armyworm Control and Technical team.
•    With the guidance of the FAO FAW Secretariat, regional FAW Coordinator, FAO sub-regional PPO and International expert on IPM/ biocontrol, and in close collaboration with National Task Force for Fall Armyworm Control support the development of a regional IPM strategy with a special focus on the demonstration country of Cameroon, including the planning for the organization of IPM field demonstration sites
•    Engage and participate in technical consultations and validation workshops on Regional IPM strategy and workplan for FAW control in Central Africa geo-zone
•    Prepare draft letter of agreement (LoA) with relevant institution(s) in the country to facilitate the implementation of the proposed work plan
•     Carry out any other relevant duties within her technical competence as may be requested by the FAO Representative.

CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING

Minimum Requirements    

–    Being of Cameroonian nationality, or resident with a regular work permit.
–    University degree specializing in crop production and protection, entomology or equivalent diploma
–    05 years of relevant experience in entomology or crop protection and production
–    Working knowledge of English, French and limited knowledge of pidgin language

Technical/Functional Skills

•    Extent and relevance of experience in entomology, crop production and protection in Cameroon or in Central Africa
•    Relevance of academic training and field experience in entomology, crop production and protection
•    Relevant expertise in research and development projects as well as international networking in entomology, crop production and protection are an asset
•    Ability to write clear and concise analytical reports for technical advice on crop production and protection.
