Buea, the capital-town of Cameroon’s South-West region, is about an hour and a half’s drive from Douala, Cameroon’s major economic city. The security situation is relatively calm. Restaurants are available in the town, but leisure facilities are limited. The town is also connected to the telephone networks, which operate normally. Cameroon is a unique country and Buea is a unique humanitarian operation. It provides for an interesting and enriching environment, but also requires a mature level of cultural awareness, as well as more stamina and commitment than elsewhere to make life comfortable and affordable. Therefore, flexibility and the ability and willingness to live and work in harsh and potentially hazardous conditions, involving physical hardship and little comfort, are essential. Many of the city’s inhabitants are English-speaking, and Cameroonian Pidgin English is the main language spoken in the shops and on the streets of Buea.
